Gintoki and Shinpachi i think Kagura would have been an even better example for your point are so called round characters and therefore can be both comical and dramatic. And almost walking as swiftly as ever, like a true ninja. A story that displays his serious side and adds those other dimensions to his character could easily be made up however, it’s not that hard. I was getting a bit bored with all the comedy this season so a serious arc is very welcome. As we’ve seen recently though, Zenzo has more than one dimension to him, and as we saw briefly in the Screwdriver arc the same can be said for Sa-chan. An amazing episode, with awesome background music right throughout it. Nice episode, Gintoki got pretty beaten up then
Jiraiya is a pretty cool guy, too bad he’s in a shounen show and won’t be allowed to do whatever it is he wants to, despite making sense. He appears in the arc, but is not the focus of the arc. I like Tsukuyo but not to the extent of being thrilled over a arc that’s mostly related to her past and the Oniwabanshu Eh, not really liking this. There is no difference between him and Zenzo or him and Sa-chan except that he is a main character and they are side characters. Right now, I feel like complaining to Einstein.
I don’t vz the seriousness, it’s just this show seems to have a very skewered view on what makes a strong female character. Will Sa-chan be in this arc? Jiraia looks like Sabrac in “Shakugan no Shana”. Holy shit, that new antagonist is pretty epic, and interesting. The only arc I remember her being in is the Screwdriver one, and that was only three episodes long.
He appears in the arc, epusode is not the focus of the arc That’s not the point. Also, pretty much every character in Gintama is there for comic relief if you want to put it that way. He literally owned Gintoki and Tsukuyo with his bare hands and kunai. And I like Tsukuyo. The one thing I disliked was the the clock ticking between transitions I’m loving the new background music used during this arc.
Although I’d like to see the serious side of Sa-chan as well.
Really good arc so far! Damn, Tsukuyo really cares about Gin so much.
Sa-chan and Zenzo are like Sakamoto in that they are comic relief characters, but they have the backstory and attributes necessary to fit in a serious arc. We have not seen him in any serious situations at all, and he has barely been in the series. Her serious side is something I’ve been longing too see! It felt extremely long aswell, which is a good thing. I wonder if he and Sa-chan would be in this arc since it involves jirziya
D i really am looking forward for the rest of it. Rather slow paced but well still pretty decent development! Whenever he does show up, it’s for comic relief. Sa-chan and Zenzo to a far lesser extent Gori-san have been reduced to plain, nearly one-line-only sub-characters by the author’s effort.
Sorachi, an arc for Sa-chan please! Poor girl doesn’t elisode know that Gin is still alive and Zenzou saved him. A jirsiya plain character would be Prince Hata. This is the one part that I skipped reading in the manga so I look forward to seeing how the other ninja guys helps in the plot.
Forum Settings Episode Information Forums. But I think he’s a bit underestimating Gintoki, which is pretty bad for a ”ultimate fighter”. P Loved all the bloody fighting scenes between Gintoki and Jiraia.
Actually, why did Sorachi focus on Tsukuyo when we already have two long established ninjas? What’s worse, you can’t actually presume that this is all just a parody or modern deconstruction of the genre. What’s with the negative comments?
I agree, a serious arc on Prince Hata would be a bit much but I don’t think Sa-chan is one dimensional, or at least there is potential for her not to be. I was getting a bit bored with all the comedy this season so a serious arc is very welcome. I sit here and can’t actually believe that Gintama sank so low – they adopted every stupid shounen cliche possible in that arc. Never though Henzo would be there to save Gintoki! For a serious plot you need unspoiled sub-characters normally new ones are introducedbut this time we had luck and an already introduced character was used for which reason this person’s chances of dying are now near to zero – a new one would have had Just the “a” -This episode proves that when done correctly, ninjas are freaking badass.
I think it would be good to focus on other characters once in a while instead of the main gang all the time, there have been a couple of episodes about the Shinsengumi for example, which have all been great.
Gintama Episode 178 Discussion
Aw damn, that face Tsukuyo made when Gin was slashed by Jiraia, so much blood coming from Gin. As we’ve seen recently though, Zenzo has more than one dimension to him, and as we saw briefly in the Screwdriver arc the same can be said for Sa-chan. Jiraia reminds me alot of Two Face from Batman haha xD. Ah, i love me some serious Gintama. Jiraiya jiraija a pretty cool guy, too bad he’s in a shounen show and won’t be allowed to do whatever it is he wants to, despite making sense.
However, he was in Shiroyasha Koutan, and would fit right in if a serious arc set during the amanto invasion were to be made. Jiraia seems to be the most evil character yet. Brotherhood 2 Kimi no Na wa.

Did you notice this? Or it’s just Gintoki protective behaviors. Taka-tin on the cover of the magazine added some nice humor gintooi this intense arc aswell.
Holy shit Jiraia is BA as fuck. I’m happy it got adapted very well from the manga! Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.
They are by no means plain characters, and as I said before – the potential is definitely there for a serious arc. Thereby disproving my logic However, although one can think of a serious arc focusing on a one-dimensional comic relief character like Baka-oji or Sa-chan, the construction of such an arc would be more difficult and it would be less convincing. Probably fast-forwarding this arc from point on.
