In spite of sell-out shows, exhibitions abroad and his art hanging on the walls of New York’s Museum of Modern Art and in Elton John and Richard Branson’s homes, Chiurai remains unaffected: It seems now, though, that the Zimbabwe military intervention is an effort to maintain the status quo. Using the vocabulary of stereotype to his advantage, Chiurai reduces African leaders to the point of parody. You see all the history that led to that particular moment. You being from Zim, is the National Gallery exhibition, in someway a more personal exploration of colonization? This process has liberated how I understand, experience, and interpret blackness itself.

I wanted to look at the way government roles are essentially exaggerated personas. I doubt that we are in that situation at all.
I’m not in the Louvre yet, but I’m working on it.
